The College of Computing and Informatics is dedicated to actively engaging students, faculty, staff and community members in learning activities that can expand perspectives, enrich viewpoints and help us learn about people who are different from ourselves. Offering college events and sharing information about other events on campus are ways in which we celebrate diversity in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Black history month (february)

• February 16th, 10am-11:30am, Student Union 340DEF: Featured Seminar Speaker: Dr. Juan E. Gilbert Lunch with students at 12pm in Student Union 340DEF Dr. Gilbert was honored by President Joe Biden with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for pioneering a universal voting system to ensure voting is more reliable and accessible for all.

• February 23rd, 1:30pm-2:30pm: CCI Book Club All are welcome for a casual discussion of the book My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson

• February 23rd, 9:00am-4:00pm: #YouBelong2: Navigating Graduate Education, hosted by the Black Research Support Network. The Black Research Support Network (BRSN) is a project that addresses racial barriers and inequities faced by Black undergraduate students in the field of computer science. There continues to be a small number of people from racially underrepresented groups who apply, enroll, and matriculate from graduate computing and engineering programs. This workshop will provide insight to diverse students about graduate education in computing and engineering. This conference is open to all students, advocates, and allies. There will be featured speakers that include Dr. Benjamin Harvey, Founder and CEO of AI Squared and Dr. Aqueasha Martin-Hammond, Associate Professor in  Human-Centered Computing Department in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). You will hear from current PhD students from different institutions. Food is provided. Registration required.

Fleurix Conference: CCI is proud to be a sponsor of The Fleurix conference! Fleurix will be held in Charlotte on October 19th at Lenny Boy Brewing Co. between 9am-4pm (the time will be confirmed soon by the event organizers). This conference celebrates women+ in technology. It’s a wonderful networking and professional opportunity for women+ technologists from high school through women+ in professional fields. This conference has brought together over 400 people in past years.

CCI Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month: What is the Hispanic Heritage Month:
The Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latine people. It is observed annually from September 15 to October 15. The dates were chosen to coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua (September 15), Mexico (September 16), and Chile (September 18).

There are many ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Some people attend festivals, concerts, and other cultural events. Others learn about Hispanic history and culture by reading books, watching movies, or visiting museums. There are even those who volunteer their time to help Hispanic communities. No matter how you choose to celebrate, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the rich and diverse heritage of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

• The theme for this year is “Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.”
• The month was first proclaimed as Hispanic Heritage Week by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
• It was expanded to a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
• Over 60 million Hispanic and Latinx people are living in the United States.
• Hispanics and Latines are the fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States.
• Hispanics and Latines have significantly contributed to American culture, politics, and society.

CCI Celebrates National Coming out day. In celebration of National Coming Out Day and LGBTQ+ History Month, CCI will be screening the film “The Imitation Game” in Woodward 106. We would like to thank the generous sponsorship of Out In Tech, Charlotte LGBTQ+ Alumni and the LGBTQ+ Graduate Coalition.
