About Bioinformatics & Genomics

Welcome

The Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics was established within the College of Computing and Informatics in 2009 to foster research and education in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Located in the Bioinformatics Building on UNC Charlotte’s CRI Campus, the Department offers a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, a Master of Science in Bioinformatics, Graduate Certificates in Bioinformatics, Computer Science Bioinformatics Concentration, B.S. and B.A. degrees, and an undergraduate Minor in Bioinformatics and Genomics. The building has both wet and dry laboratories, and includes core facilities for molecular biology, genomics, and high-performance computing. The department employs 13 traditional faculty who are dedicated full-time to the Department and its programs, 4 research faculty, 8 full-time office and laboratory staff, and several part-time instructors. At any given time there are approximately 100 graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate majors associated with the department, and growth is on the horizon.

The Department also operates a Bioinformatics Services Division on the North Carolina Research Campus, a billion-dollar, 350-acre research park in nearby Kannapolis. The focus of this group is the development and application of novel analytical methods for knowledge discovery involving large biological datasets.

Our Mission is to turn biological data into knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

OUR AFFILIATES

Bioinformatics Services Division (BiSD)

The Bioinformatics Services Division (BiSD) of UNC Charlotte provides a wide range of bioinformatics services to the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC), UNC Charlotte and other life sciences companies throughout the country. To learn more click here.

North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC)

The NC Research Campus (NCRC) is in Kannapolis, just north of Charlotte. Centered on the advancement of nutrition, agriculture, and human health, scientists from universities, industry, government and non-profit organizations are finding new ways to promote healthy lifestyles and to prevent, treat, and cure the most prevalent diseases of our times, such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s and other diet- and lifestyle-related disorders. Computational Intelligence to Predict Health and Environmental Risks (CIPHER)

In our work at the center, Computational Intelligence to Predict Health and Environmental Risks (CIPHER), we focus on genomics and computing technologies as applied to microbiology, biological and human diversity, and health. We have domestic and international partners for joint research and training in academia, medicine, industry, and government. Our projects focus on infectious diseases including emergent viruses and durable problems such as: malaria, the global spread of antibiotic resistance, food safety, and failing ecosystem health. We apply computing and empirical technologies synergistically.

The CIPHER is a university-wide center with constituents from the College of Computing and Informatics, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Education. Our goals are to coalesce expertise in computer science, bioinformatics, software and information systems, biological sciences, math, geography, public health, data science, education, and communications. We are always open to new collaborations within and extramural to the University. To learn more click here.
